Our route begins at Les Halles, the covered market in the heart of Lourdes, where the stalls gather the cheeses, cured meats, and sweets of the Pyrenees. Full Description
Lourdes is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Europe, and the town itself, beyond the sanctuary, holds the story of a girl who grew up in its narrow streets. Our Lourdes Highlights Kids Tour starts at Les Halles covered market, where the stalls bring together the cheeses, cured meats, and sweets of the Pyrenees, and where families can choose something small for a snack when the market is open.
From the market we walk to the Church of the Sacré-Cœur, with its bell tower above the rooftops and the baptismal font of Saint Bernadette inside. A short climb then leads to the Château Fort, seen from outside: from the foot of the fortress it is easy to imagine how this castle on the rock controlled the crossing of the Gave de Pau.
The route continues to Le Cachot, the old prison where Bernadette lived with her family, and to the Moulin de Boly, the water mill where she was born. Children see how the stream powered the grindstones, while our guide explains what daily life meant for a miller's family in nineteenth-century Lourdes.
We enter the sanctuary through the Porte Saint-Michel, cross the bridge over the Gave de Pau, and stop on the esplanade near the crowned Virgin. The visit ends between the mosaics and curved ramps of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the quiet of the Grotto of Massabielle, the place tied to the apparitions of 1858.
