• 1st stop

  The Former Railway Station

  Our visit starts inside what was once a busy railway station. The Gare d'Orsay opened in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle and welcomed trains from the southwest of France before it became a museum. Looking up at the great glass roof, families can still picture passengers hurrying through the hall, while the long nave now holds sculptures instead of locomotives. Guessing where the tracks once ran is an easy way to begin, and it gives younger guests a concrete image to carry through the galleries.

  Monet: The Saint-Lazare Station

  The Saint-Lazare series places us among engines, platforms, and drifting smoke. Monet painted these scenes in 1877 after gaining access to the station, and he was more interested in how light passed through steam than in architectural detail. We invite children to spot the trains between the clouds of vapor and to follow the glow of the glass roof above them. It is a reminder that a subject taken from everyday life was once a bold choice for a painter.

  Monet: Poppies

  Poppies shows a field near Argenteuil with two pairs of figures strolling through the red flowers. The lower pair is easy to notice, while the second pair blends into the hillside, which is exactly what we like to explore here. Children can count the people in the field and watch how the skyline shifts from a soft haze into color. Small observations like these turn a familiar landscape into a puzzle about perspective and distance.

  Monet: The Magpie

  Monet painted The Magpie during the winter of 1868 and 1869, capturing a single black bird perched on a gate in the snow. The white surface is far from empty: blues, violets, and warm shadows build the light that falls across the enclosure. We ask our younger guests to pick out as many shades as they can find in the snow, then to look again at the magpie. It is a simple exercise that rewards a little time in front of one canvas.

  Renoir: Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette

  This canvas brings us to a popular open-air dance in Montmartre, where friends talk and spin beneath the trees. Renoir placed the crowd slightly off center so the joy spreads across the whole scene, and the dappled light falling through the leaves gives the painting its rhythm. Children can imagine the music playing and choose the figures they would most like to meet. Counting hats, glasses, and dancing partners is another way into the celebration.

  Renoir: The Swing

  The Swing sets a young woman on a swing while a man and a child watch from the shade. Sunlight filters through the canopy and lands in irregular patches, and Renoir let those patches cross faces and fabrics. We look for the spots of light on the dresses and talk about how the painter captured a moment that lasted only seconds. The garden setting makes this a gentle place for families to slow down before the next gallery.

  Degas: The Ballet Class

  Degas studied dancers behind the scenes rather than on stage, and here a class unfolds around a central rehearsal. Some figures stretch, others wait, and one adjusts a dress, so the composition feels observed rather than arranged. We invite guests to copy a few of the poses and to notice how the floor lines pull the eye across the room. It also prepares a useful comparison with the sculpture waiting further on.

  Degas: Little Dancer Aged Fourteen

  Little Dancer Aged Fourteen stands apart from the painted ballerinas we have just seen. Degas modeled the figure in wax and used real materials for the tutu and hair ribbon, which surprised audiences when the work appeared in 1881. We compare her firm posture with the relaxed bodies in The Ballet Class and ask what the sculptor chose to show. Noticing the difference between a painting and a sculpture helps guests understand how each medium shapes the impression of a person.

  Morisot: The Cradle

  Berthe Morisot painted her sister Edma watching over a sleeping baby in a cradle. Thin brushstrokes soften the curtain and the gauze veil, so the room feels quiet and private. We ask guests to read the expression of the young mother and to guess what she might be thinking, then to look at the position of her hand. It is a calm contrast to the crowded dance scenes and a good moment to talk about family life in the nineteenth century.

  The Musée d'Orsay Clock

  Our route ends beneath the monumental clock that hangs in the nave of the museum. Its iron frame and glass face once marked departure times for travelers, and today the light passing through it frames the entire collection. We close with a family challenge about the works we have seen, naming painters, details, and favorite pieces. It is a relaxed way to gather impressions before leaving, with a last look at the city through the dial.
