Full Description
Nîmes keeps its Roman past in the open, and this private family tour follows it from the Pradier Fountain to the Temple of Diana in two hours. We walk at a pace that works for children, with stories, small challenges, and time to look around, while entrance tickets to the Arènes and the Maison Carrée are already included.
We meet at the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle, beside the Pradier Fountain, where the walk begins with a small observation game among the statues. From there we reach the Arènes de Nîmes, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world, and step inside to imagine the crowds, the gladiators, and the shows that filled its tiers.
The old town comes next: Place du Marché and its crocodile fountain, the emblem of Nîmes, then Place aux Herbes and the cathedral of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor, where we hunt for details carved into the facades. A stop at Les Halles de Nîmes shows the covered market at work, with an optional sweet break for the family.
At the Maison Carrée we step into a Roman temple preserved almost intact, and its columns make it easy to explain how Roman architecture worked. The route then opens into the Jardins de la Fontaine, a garden of pools, statues, and shaded paths, before we close among the ruins of the Temple of Diana, imagining the city as it was two thousand years ago.
The tour is private from start to finish, so the guide adapts language, pace, and level of detail to the ages in the group. We can pick up families staying in the city center at their hotel, and our guides lead the tour in English, Italian, Spanish, French, or German.
