Itinerary

• 1st stop

  Place de la République

  The heart of Arles is a wide square framed by the obelisk, an old fountain, and the carved front of Saint-Trophime. We start here, where the town gathers through the day, and our guide sets out the two thousand years of history that meet in one open space. Children have room to look around while we introduce the route, and the square is an easy landmark to find at the meeting point.

• 2nd stop

  Church of Saint-Trophime

  The Romanesque portal of Saint-Trophime is a carved book in stone. Sculpted saints, lions, and the Last Judgment crowd the doorway, and we take our time pointing out the details children recognize first. Inside, the cool nave offers a calm pause after the square, and our guide explains the pilgrims who once arrived here on their way across southern France.

• 3rd stop

  Ancient Roman Theater

  Two columns and a broken stage wall are all that remain of the Ancient Roman Theater, yet the site still shows how a classical theater worked. We explain the seating, the stage, and the acoustics in plain words, and children can test the trick of speaking from the center of the orchestra. The ruins sit in a quiet neighborhood, so there is space to explore and time to answer the questions the visit raises.

• 4th stop

  Roman Amphitheater, Les Arènes

  The Amphitheater is the stop children remember. Two levels of stone arches surround the sandy arena where gladiators once fought, and we climb into the stands to look down at the arena. Our guide explains the games, the crowds, and the building techniques with the kind of detail young guests enjoy, and there is time to sit, rest, and picture a full house.

• 5th stop

  Place de la Major

  On the way through the old quarter we reach Place de la Major, where the group has room to pause. This is our break on the route, a moment for a drink or a snack and for children to step back from the monuments. Our guide uses the stop to talk about everyday life in Arles before we continue.

• 6th stop

  Rue des Arènes

  Rue des Arènes is a narrow street of shopfronts and doorways that links the monuments. It is the sort of lane children enjoy for its colors and small details, and we look for traces of the older town along the way. Our guide keeps this stretch short, so the street is a comfortable link between two major sites rather than a long walk.

• 7th stop

  Place du Forum

  Place du Forum is a lively square built over the Roman forum, with cafe terraces and a fragment of ancient masonry still standing at its edge. The surviving columns are easy to miss, and our guide shows children where to look. We talk about the Roman city beneath our feet and let the bustle of the square do part of the storytelling.

• 8th stop

  Place Honoré-Clair

  Place Honoré-Clair is one of the smaller squares on our route, a natural point to gather and look around. We use the stop to connect what we have already seen with the streets around us, keeping the conversation light and the questions open. The quieter setting suits younger guests, who can take a breath before the last part of the walk.

• 9th stop

  Musée Réattu

  The Musée Réattu occupies a former priory beside the Rhône and holds drawings by Picasso alongside the collection of the Arles-born painter Jacques Réattu. We pause in the courtyard and by the river and tell the story of the building from outside, which keeps the visit light for children and leaves time for the final stretch along the water.

• 10th stop

  Quai Marx-Dormoy

  We finish on the Quai Marx-Dormoy, where the Rhône widens and the light changes through the day. The walk ends with open views and space to move, and children can watch the water while our guide answers the last questions. It is an easy place to say goodbye, close to the old town and to the riverside cafes.
