Our walk begins at Porte de la République, where the city walls open onto the medieval heart of Avignon. We step through the gateway together and look up at the stone towers that once guarded the entrance. The first minutes are about orientation: why Avignon built such a heavy ring of walls, and what waited inside for travelers arriving from the Rhône.

Full Description
Avignon is a city of walls, palaces, and one unfinished bridge, and this private two-hour walk follows it from the Porte de la République to the Pont Saint-Bénézet. We keep the pace comfortable for children and turn the route into games, small challenges, and stories, so the medieval city stays lively for curious young guests without turning the visit into a history lesson.
We enter through the city gate and pause in the green of Square Agricol Perdiguier, then stop in front of the church on place Saint-Didier to look for carved details. From there the route reaches Les Halles on place Pie, where the covered market and the green wall beside it give children plenty to point at, and continues through the small square of place des Châtaignes toward the carved doors of the Basilique Saint-Pierre.
Place de l'Horloge opens the civic heart of Avignon, with the clock that gives the square its name, and place du Palais brings us in front of the Palais des Papes. Counting towers and windows makes the scale of the palace easy to grasp, and the gilded Virgin above Notre-Dame-des-Doms shows how closely church and palace stood together.
We end on the riverside, facing the Pont Saint-Bénézet, the bridge that stops in the middle of the Rhône. The question of why it ends over the water carries us through floods and repairs, and it makes a natural place to close the walk with a view along the river.
The tour is private from start to finish, led by a guide who works with families and adapts language, pace, and level of detail to the ages in the group. Pickup at hotels, the port, the train station, or the airport is available on request at an extra cost, and we lead the tour in English, Italian, Spanish, French, or German.
