    Itinerary

    • We start between the two round towers of the Porte Narbonnaise, the main entrance to the Cité. From the outside the gate looks like something out of a fairy tale, and from the inside it shows how a medieval town controlled who came in. We look at the towers, the passage, and the details above the arch before stepping onto the main street.

    Full Description

Carcassonne looks like the castle children draw before they ever see one, and the Cité keeps that impression intact: double walls, pointed towers, and a castle in the middle of it all. On this private two-hour walk we cross the medieval town from the Porte Narbonnaise to the old well, with a guide who works with families and keeps the stories short, concrete, and easy to follow.

We begin between the two round towers of the Porte Narbonnaise, where the entrance alone is worth a few minutes of looking up, then stop at the bust of Dame Carcas to tell the legend that gave the city its name. A short stretch of the lices, the space between the two rings of walls, poses the question children ask first: why build two walls instead of one? From there we walk down rue Cros-Mayrevieille, past old houses and small workshops, and take a breather in Place Marcou to hunt for the oddest house on the square.

The route leads to Place du Château, where towers, arrow slits, and the whole defensive system are close enough to study together, and then inside the Château Comtal, with entrance tickets already included: we cross the access bridge, look down into the dry moat, and follow the walkway and courtyards of the castle. We return toward the Porte d'Aude for the western view of the fortifications, without continuing into the lower town, and come back to the heart of the Cité for the Basilique Saint-Nazaire, where gargoyles and carved creatures reward a careful look.

We finish at the Place du Grand Puits, in front of the old well, with the practical question that closes the walk: how did the inhabitants get water during a siege? The tour is private from start to finish, paced for the ages in the group, with time for questions and breaks along the way, and one rate covers adults and children. Departures are available in the morning, afternoon, and evening, the meeting point is customizable, and our guides lead the tour in English, Italian, Spanish, French, or German. Pickup at hotels, the port, the train station, or the airport is available on request at an extra cost.
