We start outside the Basilique Saint-Sernin, the largest Romanesque church in Europe, and begin by looking up: counting the levels of the bell tower together opens the tour as a game and shows how the building grew upward over the centuries. Around us the brick facade and the carved doorways give the first clue about the pink city.

Full Description
Toulouse is called the pink city, and the color is not a decorative detail: the old town is built almost entirely of brick, from the churches to the palaces, and the shade changes street by street depending on the light and the century. On this private two-hour walk we follow that thread from the Romanesque bell tower of Saint-Sernin to the riverside at Port de la Daurade, with a guide who works with families and turns the route into a series of small searches.
We open at the Basilique Saint-Sernin, the largest Romanesque church in Europe, counting the levels of the bell tower together before walking into the center along rue du Taur, the old road that once connected the shrine to the town. Along the way we compare bricks from deep red to pale orange, and we stop at Notre-Dame du Taur, a church squeezed between the houses whose facade looks like a great wall with bells set into it. A pause in Square Charles-de-Gaulle brings the medieval tower behind the Capitole into view.
The heart of the walk is the Capitole: on the pavement of the square we find the great Occitan cross and the twelve signs of the zodiac, and under the arcades on the opposite side we look up at the painted ceiling above the shops. From there we reach the Couvent des Jacobins, where entrance tickets are included and the palm-tree vault opens above the nave in a single ribbed column, then continue to the Renaissance portal of Hôtel d'Assézat, whose ordered stone facade contrasts with the medieval brick we have just studied.
We stop at the entrance of the Pont Neuf, without crossing it, to see the arches and the openings set into the piers, a solution built to let the water through when the Garonne rises. The walk ends at Port de la Daurade, on the open bank facing the river and the dome of La Grave. The tour is private from start to finish, paced for the ages in the group, with time for questions and breaks, and one rate covers adults and children. Departures are available in the morning, afternoon, and evening, the meeting point is customizable, our guides lead the tour in English, Italian, Spanish, French, or German, and pickup at hotels, the port, the train station, or the airport is available on request at an extra cost.
